The Heart of Christ: What Moves Him
The teachings of Scripture reveal the character of Jesus—what grieves Him, what pleases Him, and who He is for us.
What Grieves the Heart of Jesus
Jesus is deeply grieved by:
1. Defilement of God's Temple: This includes both the physical body of a believer and the collective body of the Church.
2. False Paths to Salvation: He is the only Way, Truth, and Life; to suggest another savior rejects His sacrifice.
3. The Mistreatment of Children: He holds a special, protective love for the vulnerable and innocent.
4. A Stiff-Necked Spirit: Hardened hearts and stubborn pride that resist repentance and correction.
5. Betrayal: The profound pain of treachery from those close to Him, as exemplified by Judas.
6. Lack of Faith: When His followers doubt His power and promises.
7. Lust: A heart that turns from purity and covets others.
Furthermore, He is not impressed by half-hearted devotion. He seeks willing servants, not the reluctant. Ultimately, the rejection of His love and the abuse of His people offend Him deeply. (Will you accept His cup of suffering, or reject it?)
The Character of Christ: Who He Is
In beautiful contrast to what grieves Him, His character is our comfort and strength: He is bold yet compassionate, faithful and true. He is a humble friend who is always accepting and comforting. He is generous, encouraging, and protective.
He is a jealous God who desires authentic relationship, not vain worship that resembles empty party songs. He is a demonstrative Teacher, and whatever He asks you to do, He equips you to accomplish.
He is a provider who notices every act of kindness—even a smile for a neighbor. He cares for those who care for His children.
He is not afraid to offer correction if it leads to salvation and growth. His correction, whether from a place of love or disappointment, is direct and swift. He calls a "beast" a beast, a "Judas" a Judas, and the "lukewarm" to account, all for the purpose of redemption.
The Most Important Truth
Above all, He is the Creator who formed us in His likeness and loves every person across the globe. Yet, His most profound power is this: Jesus Christ is the only one who can give life to dry bones.
It is a tragedy to use His light for self-exaltation and pride, a hypocrisy when the world rejects the very Savior we claim to represent. Remember, if the world rejects someone who proclaims His name, know that Jesus loves that person fiercely.
He is a winner, victorious over sin and death. So come to Him, and be fully alive in Christ while you still have breath.
